Yes, You Can Grow a Garden!
If you have any claim to an outdoor space, whether it be a balcony, deck, porch, windowsill, backyard, side yard, front yard, driveway, stoop, steps… (I could go on forever, baby!), you can grow a garden!
You might create a container garden with pots, raised beds, grow bags, plastic buckets, milk jugs, heck even a tire. Or you can do some digging and plant directly into the ground.
Either way, I would purchase some organic soil (organic potting mix if using a container) to give your seeds or seedlings a good foundation. First, water frequently, then as your vegetables, fruits, and flowers grow you can water less frequently but more deeply.
Ideally, you’d pick the sunniest spot you can get your grubby hands on. (I’m not trying to insult you; your hands will get dirty unless you have gloves.) But if you live in a shady area, there are several plants that do just fine in partial shade.
I would cover your soil with mulch for protection, temperature regulation, and water retention. We don’t want scorched, sterile, desert dirt…unless of course you’re growing a cactus garden down there in the southwest.
Another fun topic to look into is companion planting. Corns, beans, and squash anyone? I just love a good tomato and basil setup. This brings out the best in your plants, but don’t forget to space them out. The roots need plenty of room.
Look, people, if I can successfully grow delicious watermelons, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis, and herbs in New York City, you definitely can yield some delicious fruit wherever you are. Happy Planting!
