The Apocalyptic Nature of New Motherhood
“Apocalypse” comes from the Greek word apokalypsis which essentially means a “reveal”. Unlike the last book in the Bible, you don’t need John the Apostle to reveal in writing whom you can rely on when becoming a new mom.
The lead up to, and especially the aftermath of birth, reveal all you need to know. Who will be there for you? Who is competent? Who is selfless? Who has strength of character? Who respects you? Who wants you to succeed?
The birth of a baby and emergence of a new mother is a magnificent and miraculous occasion. Not everyone treats it as such. (I suppose I don’t have to tell you that.)
The horsemen of Apathy, Disrespect, Ineptitude, and Hostility may ride in after the joy of meeting your precious child. You will soon discover whom your friends and foes are. Let this information, or revelation, guide your future decisions as a mom.
The rare person that overcomes his or her pride and helps you selflessly, without the need for attention, should not have his or her name blotted out of your book, but should be confessed in your prayers of gratitude.
The people that forsake, disrespect, and hurt you should simply be judged according to their actions. Cast them away and move on to a happier, more productive future.
You’re a new mom and a new woman. The maiden has passed away, and it’s time to accept what’s been revealed.
